Cooperatives Build Community

Blah blah a cooperative is a business or organization owned by and operated for the benefit of those using its services. Profits and earnings generated by the cooperative are distributed among the members, also known as user-owners. Typically, an elected board of directors and officers run the cooperative while regular members have voting power to control the direction of the cooperative. Members can become part of the cooperative by purchasing shares, though the amount of shares they hold does not affect the weight of their vote. Members agree on a common need and a strategy on how to meet that need. An organizing committee then conducts exploratory meetings, surveys, and cost and feasibility analyses before every member agrees with the business plan.

History

By 1956, the Association had begun conducting a preliminary survey work to establish the feasibility of constructing an electric generation plant that would service Naknek, South Naknek & King Salmon. In1957, a resolution to support a loan request from the Rural Electrification Administration, the Board of Directors declared that 101 out of 160 prospective consumers had already become members of the Naknek Electric Association.

The next year the Association secured their first loan to begin construction of a generation and distribution system and in 1960 NEA began connecting and delivering electricity to the residential and commercial members of the cooperative. Delivery of industrial electricity service to local seafood canneries began in 1961 and since then our utility has grown to power the gateway to the Alaska Peninsula and the largest commercial sockeye salmon fishery in the world.

Our Founders

Many of the visionary founders of the Association continued to serve as stewards of the community in developing local businesses, municipal infrastructure, regional legislation and policy throughout the 49th state.
